Link3 ontvangt het Arnhems Compliment
Link3 Webservice ontving gisteren het Arnhems Compliment uit handen van Michiel van Wessem Wethouder Werken, Cultuur en Recreatie in Arnhem. Het juryrapport schreef haar rapport: “Link3 Webservice steunt al jaren de Arnhemse Uitdaging met de bouw en verbouw van de website” en “Erik laat zien dat ook iedere ZZPer Maatschappelijk Betrokken kan Ondernemen”. Uit acht genomineerden ontvingen Link3 Webservice en ING Arnhem dit jaar het Arnhems Compliment.

De Arnhemse Uitdaging bouwt bruggen tussen het bedrijfsleven en de samenleving en legt verbindingen tussen hen om de leefkwaliteit in Arnhem te verbeteren. De Arnhemse Uitdaging doet denken aan 't Noaberschap, klaarstaan voor je naaste. Soms in de vorm van grote bedragen of een enorme inzet, de andere keer zijn het kleine dingen. Met iedere ondersteuning kun je elkaar goed helpen en ontstaat er een betere sfeer. Dat geeft je een goed gevoel. Dat werkt zo in het klein met je buren, maar ook in een wijk of in heel Arnhem kunnen we samen de sfeer verbeteren.
Simplenews en de nieuwe telecomwet
Dankzij uitstel van de telecomwet hebben eigenaren van mailinglijsten nu nog tot 1 oktober 2009 om hun mailinglijst te valideren. De nieuwe wet bepaalt dat per 1 oktober iedereen vooraf toestemming moet geven voor opname in een e-mailbestand. Dit geld niet alleen voor nieuwe toevoegingen maar ook voor bestaande lijsten. De nieuwe wet zou oorspronkelijk op 1 juli actief worden.
Voor Simplenews heeft Link3 Webservice een oplossing ontwikkeld waarmee beheerders van bestaande mailinglists hun bestaande abonnees om bevestiging kunnen vragen voor opname in het mailingbestand. Bestaande abbonees ontvangen een e-mail met daarin in een bevestigingslink. Met een enkele klik bevestigd de ontvanger zijn of haar deelname aan de nieuwsbrief of mailinglijst. De e-mail en de bevestigingspagina op de website zijn naar wens aan te passen. Simplenews is een veelgebruikte Drupal-module waarmee nieuwsbrieven en mailings verstuurd kunnen worden.

Kennismaking met Joomla-community
Gluren bij de buren, zo voelde het in het begin. Maar al snel was er de herkenning, de overeenkomsten waren groter dan de verschillen: Open Source, website, community. Nadat het ijs gebroken was werden het twee interessante dagen op de Nederlandse Joomla!dagen in Utrecht.
Ik heb uitgebreid gesproken met Ton van de Weerd een van de mensen achter joomlacommunity.eu. Het is interessant om met mensen uit een andere community te spreken, om de verschillen maar ook, en vooral, de overeenkomsten te ervaren. Al snel ebt het gevoel van 'gluren bij de buren' weg en blijken we gewoon dorpsgenoten te zijn die veel delen en verschillende ervaringen hebben opgedaan. Open Source communities kunnen veel van elkaar leren en elkaar daarmee versterken. Ik zal de eerste gelegenheid aangrijpen om de Drupal community in contact te brengen met Joomla, Typo3 en/of Wordpress communities.
Simplenews release candidate 1
It took a while, but finally today I released the first simplenews release candidate! And I'm proud of it. It was on February 3rd 2008 that I committed the first Drupal 6 port of Simplenews module. I was surprised how quickly the conversion from Drupal 5 went. Only 40 hours for a basic conversion ;) But basic was not enough and I got my hands dirty, very dirty. The mailing back-end is now fully rewritten to make it even more reliable and scalable than simplenews ever was. As non English site builder I also wanted Simplenews to be fully i18n compatible, and now it is. Also usability was on my list: I simplified forms, added permissions and even removed some rarely used features. Last but not least I wanted simplenews to work well with other modules: CCK, Views, Actions and Triggers. Now, approx 180 hours and 140 commits later the module is good enough to be released.
For many of the users which already use simlenews 6.x the module was already good enough. End 2008 more than 3000 sites have simplenews 6.x installed. I am glad that all these users have enough confidence to start using the module while still under development. During developing I am very aware of the users depending on the module and the problems it may cause when making critical errors. Therefore it is rewarding to read in the issue queue how a user express his confidence in the module. With the RC1 out I like to thank all those who use the module, all those who reported their problems and did not stop posting until they found the cause (or until I submitted a patch) and special thanks to those who filed patches. Every little help counts!
Simplenews questionnaire
In august and september 2008 I held a questionnaire amongst simplenews users to get a better picture of the use of the module and the wishes of the current users. No less than 60 people participated and as expected the questionnaire gave better insights and helped me to make plans for future development of simplenews.
These are the results of the questionnaire and my outline of future development.

The use of simplenews
A typical simplenews user built one or two website with simplenews. A typical Simplenews applications contains up to five newsletters which are sent once per month up to once per week to up to 1000 subscribers per newsletter. Resulting in a total newsletter output of up to 100K emails per year.

Support for bouncing email addresses, Overview of bounced addresses, easy block/unsubscribe/remove addresses which bounce.

Statistics of received emails (bounce), opened emails, clicked links. Alternatively support for google analytics.

Flexible target lists
Be able to send newsletters to an arbitrary selection of email addresses. For example use email addresses in a view as a target for a mailing. Flexible system to (re)send a newsletter to a collection of emails.

Collect subscriber data
A method to collect data from subscribers at subscription and by importing subscriber data. Data to be collected must be flexible as CCK. Data must be collected for both anonymous and subscribed users.

Subscriber management
Ability to manage large number of subscribers. Search options, mass edit/delete/block.
Funding of future development:
The above new features are highly requested but only a small number of people are willing to fund these developments while on the other hand the commercial interest in this functionality is high. Therefore I like to I challenge the community of simplenews users to work together on these subjects. Those who want to supply code are requested to contact me directly or put in in the simplenews issue queue. I like to coordinate development efforts, participate in it where funds are available or work on your project if it requires the above functionality. Together we can make it happen!
Short term development
- Move advanced options to a collapsed fieldset on the node add/edit form (done).
- Simplify the newsletter block settings and permissions (done).
- Increase the theming options of subscription block (done).
